Water Cannon Used on Sri Lankan Protesters Outside Presidential Residence

Protesters toppled gates and were sprayed by water cannons near the home of the Rajapaksa family in Tangalle, Sri Lanka, on April 4, as demonstrations against the government for alleged mismanagement of the country’s economy grew. Footage recorded by Hasindu Imalshan shows protesters breaking through barriers on Matara Road in Tangalle. Protesters were also sprayed with water cannons in an attempt to disperse crowds. The protest took place near Carlton House, which is a residence of the politically prominent Rajapaksa family. The Sri Lankan cabinet and the governor of the Central Bank have resigned but protesters are continuing to call for the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
